A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is software that provides control over each part of a production process. From incoming raw materials and inventory tracking, to manufacturing steps, to finished goods shipping, MES tracks every step and stores all data associated with a given product. MES controls and maintains the data required to validate each process step, so its advantages apply across all process industries. Additionally, when used in pharmaceutical and biotech companies, MES can facilitate compliance with stringent FDA regulatory requirements and satisfy current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP),.
With calculations, both simple and complex, performed by computer, operator errors can be drastically minimized. With tighter control over material and equipment tracking, MES provides much clearer visibility into the current state of operations, allowing for a higher state of readiness for production execution. In larger applications where a higher-level ERP system and/or equipment controls are used, MES has the capability to interface with these systems to broaden the umbrella of fully-controlled processes.
